We have an opening for an Environmental Engineer. You will provide engineering support for the planning, design, testing, and operation & maintenance of groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems at the LLNL Livermore Site and Site 300, in Tracy, California. The position is in Environmental Engineering Division of the Environmental Restoration Department.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
In this role you will
Provide comprehensive environmental engineering knowledge for environmental remediation activities at LLNL.
Research, develop, design and test cost-effective engineering solutions for groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems; ensure all system designs comply with DOE and LLNL facility regulations and safety requirements.
Monitor treatment system operations and identify opportunities to optimize and improve systems, including opportunities for improved technologies, increased efficiencies, and cost savings.
Plan and conduct field experiments to develop, adapt, demonstrate, and validate new environmental remediation technologies.
Participate in engineering design reviews of environmental remediation systems.
Prepare technical and regulatory required documentation.
Ensure compliance with all federal and state regulatory requirements and LLNL environmental policies.
Keep abreast of new environmental policies and environmental technologies and maintain knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and how they impact cleanup operations.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level
Provide advanced environmental engineering knowledge for environmental remediation activities at LLNL.
Perform advanced engineering design of ground water and soil vapor remediation systems and participate in the implementation of new systems and modification of existing systems.
Lead engineering design reviews of environmental remediation systems.
Qualifications
Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Relevant experience in the design, operations, and maintenance of environmental remediation systems.
Comprehensive knowledge and relevant experience with technical aspects of environmental restoration, including: groundwater and soil remediation systems; pressure and flow calculations; environmental chemistry; and treatability tests.
Ability to apply engineering principles to solve moderate to complex technical problems with ingenuity and creativity.
Comprehensive knowledge of State of California and Federal regulations and requirements related to remediation activities.
Comprehensive knowledge of standard software applications (such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and ability to work on multiple computing platforms (PC and Mac).
Ability to direct own research working effectively in a collaborative team environment and independently.
Proficient communication skills both verbal and written to interact effectively with team members and external parties; to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team environment; and to prepare, present, document, and explain technical information.
Additional qualifications, at the TSS.3 level
Advanced knowledge and significant experience in environmental remediation and the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of ground water and soil remediation systems and system components, including extraction and injection wellhead design, pump specifications, treatment media and vessels, pipelines, and associated instrumentation.
Advanced knowledge and significant experience with engineering standards, practices and processes; generation of requirements and design documents, configuration control, preparation of test plans and user documentation, and formal and informal design review processes.
Advanced communication skills both verbal and written to interact effectively with the scientific community, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders; to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team environment; and to present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
Qualifications We Desire
Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering or related technical field.
Advanced knowledge and significant experience with the design, operations and maintenance of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition Systems (SCADA) and related technology to both acquire data and control devices remotely; operations and maintenance of Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) to display the remote location schematic, display alarms, display trends, generate reports and control devices.
Experience designing and operating groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems for multiple, co-mingled contaminants, including volatile organic compounds, high-explosive compounds, perchlorate, nitrate, and uranium.
